Astor Piazzolla & Tango Nuevo
TANGO NIGHT
21 January 2026 | Rialto Theatre, Limassol
Live concert — cello & accordion
ABOUT THE CONCERT
Tango Night is an evening of popular tango music — recognisable, emotional and deeply engaging.  This is the tango people know and love: passionate, rhythmic, intense, and full of life.

On this evening at the Rialto Theatre, the music of Astor Piazzolla and classic tango nuevo will be performed live by a duo of cello and accordion.

This is music about:
● inspiration and passion,
● closeness and rhythm,
● emotion that speaks directly to the listener.
HOW IT SOUNDS
Live sound.
No distance between the stage and the audience.
No electronics. No effects.

Just two instruments — cello and accordion — creating a dense, expressive and carefully shaped musical narrative.

Here, tango is not background music and not only dance music.
It is concert music, meant to be listened to, felt and experienced.
PROGRAMME

ALREADY PERFORMED IN CYPRUS
Pedro y Juan is already familiar to the Cypriot audience.

In July 2025, Yana Chekina and Evgeniya Popova travelled to Cyprus and performed at Kourion as part of the Evgeny Grinko Ensemble, appearing on stage during the summer cultural programme.

It was through this collaboration that we first experienced their playing up close — and heard how powerfully, freely and convincingly they perform. Their music stood out immediately: intense, emotional, rhythmically precise and deeply expressive.

This experience led us to invite Yana and Evgeniya specifically as Pedro y Juan — with a full tango programme, presented in a chamber concert format, where their music can be heard in all its detail and intimacy.
WHY PEDRO Y JUAN
Inviting Pedro y Juan was a conscious curatorial decision.

At Celebrity Gala, we bring to Cyprus only the projects we truly love, listen to ourselves and believe belong on stage. This concert is exactly such a project.

Pedro y Juan represents tango as living music — emotional, intelligent and deeply human — performed with respect for tradition and freedom of interpretation.
THE FORMAT
This is a chamber concert evening with strong live presence and subtle theatricality.
Pedro y Juan works not only with sound, but also with silence, pacing and inner rhythm.
There is no external spectacle — only attention to how music lives and breathes in the space of the hall.
PERFORMERS
  • Yana Chekina
    (cello)
Yana Chekina is a cellist and composer who combines the academic foundation of the Gnessin Academy with experimental and theatrical sound exploration. She performs with the ensembles Pedro y Juan and the Evgeny Grinko collective, and also creates music for theatre and live performances. Her works and appearances have been featured on the stages of Sovremennik, Yermolova Theatre, Et Cetera, CDR, as well as various venues across Europe, England, and Turkey.
  • Evgeniya Popova
    (accordion)
Evgeniya Popova is an accordionist, pianist, composer, laureate of international competitions, and a member of the ensembles Pedro y Juan, Korolev Popova, and the Evgeny Grinko ensemble. She is also the author of music for animated films and theatrical productions in London, as well as an experienced educator.

Beginning her musical path at the age of eight, Evgeniya continued her education through a specialized music school and college, culminating in a postgraduate degree from the Gnessin Academy of Music in 2016. She has successfully performed across Europe, Turkey, UK and the Balkans. Her repertoire reflects a deep admiration and love for minimalistic music, tango and French musette, as well as her original compositions. A special place in her program is dedicated to Astor Piazzolla and his tango nuevo, featuring rare masterpieces and iconic works in the genre that convey profound life meanings through the compact form of music.

Currently, Evgeniya is pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Therapy while having recently completed the “Film Music” course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Together, Yana Chekina and Evgeniya Popova form the unique duo Pedro y Juan, where classical training meets improvisational freedom, and academic precision blends with theatrical expression.
