The Deputy Minister of Culture
Republic of Cyprus
Subject: Request for a Review of the Existing Framework for International Cultural Events at Heritage Venues
Dear Madam Minister,
I am writing as a visitor and supporter of cultural events in Cyprus.
Cyprus possesses a unique cultural and archaeological heritage of international significance. At the same time, the country has increasingly established itself as a destination for high-quality cultural events that attract internationally recognised artists, diplomats, cultural institutions, business leaders, sponsors and visitors from abroad.
In my view, these events contribute not only to the cultural life of Cyprus, but also to its international visibility, cultural diplomacy and cultural tourism.
I fully support the important work of the Department of Antiquities in preserving and protecting Cyprus’ archaeological heritage. The protection of these sites must remain a priority for future generations.
At the same time, I respectfully believe that there may be value in reviewing whether the existing framework governing cultural events at heritage venues adequately reflects the realities and requirements of contemporary international cultural productions.
Large-scale cultural events often welcome audiences of more than one thousand visitors, including international guests, diplomatic representatives and cultural delegations. Such events present operational and hospitality requirements that differ from those of ordinary site visits.
While heritage protection should always remain paramount, it may be beneficial to explore whether visitor services and hospitality arrangements can be developed in ways that remain fully compatible with the preservation of archaeological sites and with international best practices.
Many renowned heritage venues around the world have developed frameworks that seek to balance conservation with visitor experience. Cyprus has an opportunity to contribute its own model, reflecting both the highest standards of heritage protection and its ambitions as an international cultural destination.
In light of the above, I respectfully request that the Ministry consider:
1. Reviewing the existing framework governing international cultural events at heritage venues;
2. Assessing whether the current regulations adequately support Cyprus’ cultural, tourism and international engagement objectives;
3. Initiating a consultation process involving representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the Department of Antiquities, cultural event organisers, tourism stakeholders, cultural institutions and other relevant parties;
4. Exploring the development of updated guidelines that preserve Cyprus’ unique cultural heritage while supporting the successful hosting of international cultural events;
5. Considering whether visitor hospitality and audience services may be accommodated in a manner fully consistent with heritage protection requirements.
I would be grateful if the Ministry could provide its position regarding the possibility of such a review and consultation process.
Thank you for your attention and for your continued work in supporting culture and preserving the rich heritage of Cyprus.
Yours faithfully,
